Summer is gone.  School is back.  And we have just the thing to help you connect with God, connect with others, and to help this school year go really well.

It's called G1. It stands for God First.
Jesus told us to seek the Kingdom of God first in our lives.
At G1, we'll be talking about how to actually do that.

G1 will be a MIDDLE SCHOOL + HIGH SCHOOL weekend.
It's in town.
It's friends.
It's worship, Bible study, serving others, and growing closer to God.
It's going to be a great weekend, and we hope you will join us!

Here are the details:

  When: September 27-28

Where: At our church building, in our community, and at host homes

Who: 7th-12th grade students - plus our awesome interns and some great AFC students

  Cost: $25

Sign-up Deadline: Wednesday, Sept 18 or Sunday, Sept 15 to get a free G1 t-shirt.

Okay, so those are the main details, here are a few additional things to know.  And to help your day go better, the information appears in question and answer format.

Why are we doing this?  G1 is happening as an early-fall event to give each of us an opportunity to grow in faith and in our relationship with God.  The school year can be such a busy time, and it's awesome to be able to spend some time really growing in faith near the beginning of the school year.

When does it start? When does it end?  Everything will start on Friday night at 7:00pm and end on Saturday night around 8:00 or 9:00.  A special "encore" will happen on Sunday morning when some breakfast foods will be provided before classes and then our classes will focus on the same topics of G1.

What if I have a football game on Friday night?  Or something on Saturday?  One of the reasons we are doing an in-town retreat is to allow as many students as possible to be able to be involved.  So if you need to be gone for part of G1, it's okay.  Just let us know when you'll be gone on the sign-up form.

Where do we sleep on Friday night?  Students will stay in host homes.  Everyone will be grouped by grade and gender.  There will likely be a total of six host homes:  7th & 8th girls, 7th & 8th guys, 9th & 10th girls, 9th & 10th guys, 11th & 12th girls, 11th & 12th guys.

What will we be doing?  It's sort of a mix between a retreat, a service project, and a youth conference.  If you've been to Illuminate before, it will be similar to that, but not exactly.  Here's what we can tell you:  you can expect fun, time to get to know other students, worship, Bible study, some big-group activities, some small-group activities, a service project, and a few surprises along the way.

What about the football game on Saturday?  Oh, are you speaking of the Texas A&M football game?  The one vs. Arkansas?  Well, we know there are a lot of people who like watching the game.  We'll likely have a football watching party.  If you want to watch the game, great.  If you don't, there will be other things to do.

Will G1 be boring?  Well, it's been said that only boring people get bored...so...well...    How about this: If you come ready to have a great weekend and enjoy being with other students, we think you're going to love it.

Will the Starbucks coffee or Dunkin donuts store be open during G1?  No, our church doesn't have a cofee shop or a donut shop.  Sorry.

Will the all you can eat buffet be open during G1?  No, our church doesn't have an all you can eat buffet.  Sorry.

Will the pool in the basement and the water slides be open during G1?  Come on, are you kidding?  Why do we have to answer questions about things we don't have?  There is no swimming pool in the basement.  Just a bowling alley.

Can we bring friends?  Yep.  That would be awesome.

Can we bring pickles dipped in ketchup?  No, please don't.

What is covered with the $25 registration cost?  Everything you need for the weekend, including a workbook, snacks, 3 meals on Saturday, supplies for a few activities, and transportation. Sign-up by Sunday, September 15 to get a free G1 t-shirt.

Do we need anything other than the $25?  Yes, sleeping bag, clothes for each day, and maybe some things for our service project like work gloves or yard tools.

What if I can't afford the $25?  Let us know.  We have a limited number of full and partial scholarships available.  We do not want anyone to miss this weekend because of financial reasons.

What did one ocean say to another ocean?  Nothing, they just waved.

What else do I need to know?  Phones - This will be a technology-free weekend.  If you bring a phone, we'll have envelopes for you to turn in phones when you arrive on Friday night.  They'll be returned on Saturday night when G1 is over.  You are always welcome to call your parents or talk to your parents at anytime during the weekend.  We don't go tech-free to keep you from talking to your aweome parents.  We just get tired of people being on their phone non-stop and ignoring everyone around them.  And we have had difficulty at past events like this with students being on their phones at night or calling other students when everyone is supposed to be asleep.  That's it.  So we're asking that G1 be a non-phone weekend.

What if I have questions?  You can do a few things:  call us, email us, text us, find us at church, ask someone else who looks smart, or submit your question at the bottom of the sign-up form.

Hope you can join us!
